Requirement for becoming an Approved Driving Instructor

To become an approved driving instructor you will need to meet certain critera set by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) which are as follows:

  • You will need to be a holder of a full Uk or European Economic Area unrestricted car driving licence.

  • You will need to have held a full driving licence or equivalent for at least 4 of the past 6 years prior to entering the register of driving instructors.

  • You must not have been disqualified from driving within the last 4 years.

  • You must have no more than 5 driving licence penalty points.

  • You must be considered a fit & proper person by the DSA. A Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check is also required and you will need to be accepted onto the register of driving instructors.

To then become a fully qualified approved driving instructor:

  • You will need to pass all 3 parts of the examinations required which are:

    • Driving instructors theory & hazard perception test
    • Test of driving ability
    • Test of instructional Ability
  • You will also need to apply for your approved driving instructors registration within 1 year of passing the test of instructional ability.
